The Leap

Last week, I officially launched my side hustle.

I am now a freelance digital marketer.

Why become a freelancer when I already have a stable job?

First, let’s be real — I want to earn extra. The cost of living crisis isn’t going anywhere, and there’s no relief in sight. It’s always good to have a financial cushion when things get tight. I spoke to my employer about a potential wage increase, but I understand they can only offer so much. So instead of waiting around for a promotion that may never come, I’m taking matters into my own hands.

Second, I want to return to marketing. Before moving to Australia, I worked in sales and marketing for a tech distributor. I loved it — the strategy, the persuasion, the human connection. But when I migrated to Sydney, I couldn’t land a marketing job because I lacked local experience and certifications. My overseas credentials weren’t recognised. So, I pivoted into something completely different: Accounting. It was unexpectedly exciting — numbers, financial insights, a whole new challenge. I’ve spent the last six years working in Finance, but deep down, I still miss marketing. My heart has never stopped longing for it.

I don’t know if this is still the “New Year, New Me” hangover. But now feels like the perfect time to start my side hustle. With my combined knowledge of creativity and finance, I just might have the edge to make this work. Hopefully.

I won’t lie — I’m both terrified and excited. There are countless ways this could go wrong. But what if it all falls into place? What if this leap is exactly what I needed?

Life is a gamble, but the biggest risk is standing still.

Nothing changes if nothing changes.
